The lateral finger X‑ray places the affected finger in a true lateral with the finger resting on its medial or lateral surface on the image receptor, other digits flexed and taped away. Center the central ray perpendicular to the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint, include distal phalanx through the distal metacarpal, remove jewelry, immobilize with sponge/tape, and collimate to the digit.

In the anatomical position (palms facing forward), "lateral" means toward the outer, thumb side. The thumb (first digit) is the most lateral finger. The index (second digit) lies on the lateral half of the hand compared with the middle, ring and little fingers, which are progressively more medial toward the ulnar (little‑finger) side.

Position the patient seated or standing with the elbow flexed 90° and the forearm vertical. Place the hand in a true lateral (ulnar side against the image receptor) with fingers extended and gently stacked so metacarpals and phalanges are superimposed; abduct the thumb slightly if a separate view is needed. Centre the x‑ray beam at the MCP region, include wrist to fingertips, remove jewelry, and immobilize to prevent motion.

For routine finger X‑ray, obtain at least two views (PA and lateral); a three‑view series (PA/AP, oblique, and lateral) is standard when a fracture or dislocation is suspected. Additional tailored projections may be added to better demonstrate joint alignment, small avulsions, or intra‑articular extension. Clinical judgment guides whether more views or repeat imaging are needed.

A lateral view in X‑ray is a side‑on radiograph taken at 90° to the frontal (AP/PA) projection, producing a profile image. It separates overlapping structures, shows depth and spatial relationships, and helps detect fractures, displacements, fluid levels, or soft‑tissue abnormalities. Commonly used for chest, spine, skull and joints, the patient’s side is placed against the detector while the X‑ray beam passes laterally.

The lateral position means lying on one side (right or left lateral recumbent), with the head supported, top leg slightly flexed and a pillow between knees to maintain hip alignment. It’s used to improve airway patency, reduce aspiration risk, relieve pressure on the back or surgical sites, and assist respiratory function. Proper alignment and padding prevent nerve or skin injury.
