An axial view in X‑ray is a projection obtained with the x‑ray beam directed along or across the long axis of a body part, producing a transverse (cross‑sectional) image. It reveals relationships of bones, joints, airways and soft tissues that frontal views may miss, and is often used for spine, skull base and extremity assessments to detect fractures, dislocations or foreign bodies.

AP view stands for anteroposterior projection. The X‑ray beam passes from the patient’s front (anterior) to back (posterior), with the detector behind them. It’s used when patients can’t stand for a PA view (for example, supine or bedside imaging). AP films may magnify the heart and mediastinum compared with PA views, so interpretation adjusts for that.

AP (anteroposterior) view is a front-to-back shoulder X-ray where the beam passes from anterior to posterior. It images the clavicle, acromioclavicular and glenohumeral joints and proximal humerus to detect fractures, dislocations, arthritis and joint-space changes. Variants include neutral, internal and external rotation. Overlap of structures can limit detail, so axillary or scapular Y views are often added.

AP (anteroposterior) and PA (posteroanterior) describe X‑ray beam direction. AP projects front-to-back (beam enters anterior chest), often used in supine or portable exams; it increases cardiac magnification and can obscure lung detail. PA projects back-to-front (beam enters posterior chest) and is the standard upright chest view, giving less heart magnification and clearer lung and mediastinal outlines.

"Axial" comes from the Latin axis, meaning a central line. It denotes structures or orientations aligned with or surrounding that line — the body’s long axis. In anatomy the axial skeleton (skull, vertebral column, ribs) forms the central support. In imaging and biomechanics, "axial" describes slices or forces oriented along or around that central axis, like axial loads or transverse planes.

An axial axillary shoulder X‑ray itself isn’t painful, as it’s quick and noninvasive, but positioning can cause discomfort or sharp pain if the shoulder is injured, dislocated, fractured, or very stiff. Radiographers will use gentle, modified positions or alternative views and can pause for pain relief. Tell staff about pain or limited movement so they can adapt the technique.
