An oblique view in an X‑ray is a radiographic projection taken with the patient or X‑ray beam rotated at an angle between frontal (AP/PA) and lateral. It reduces anatomical overlap, highlights joint spaces, bony details, and fracture lines, and clarifies structures not well seen on standard views. Oblique views are used when additional perspective is needed for diagnosis or surgical planning.

The mortise view is generally considered the best single radiographic view for the ankle because it visualizes the entire ankle mortise and tibiotalar joint space without overlap, allowing assessment of joint alignment, cartilage space and syndesmotic widening. However, standard ankle evaluation typically uses a three-view series—AP, mortise (or AP with 15–20° internal rotation) and lateral—for comprehensive assessment.

Typical cost for a foot X‑ray (AP and oblique views) ranges roughly: India ₹200–₹1,000; UK (private) £30–£150; US $50–$300. Many public systems provide X‑rays free at point of care; private clinics, urgent care, and hospitals charge more. Position the patient seated or supine with the plantar surface flat on the image receptor. Rotate the foot medially about 30–45° to obtain an oblique projection. Center the x‑ray beam perpendicular to the base of the third metatarsal, including the entire foot. Collimate tightly, use appropriate exposure settings, apply lead shielding, and instruct the patient to remain still during exposure.
