AP (anteroposterior) view: the x‑ray beam travels from the front to the back of the body; the patient faces the detector or lies supine, often used when upright positioning isn’t possible. Lateral view: the beam travels from one side to the other with the body’s side against the detector; it adds depth, separates overlapping structures, and helps localize or clarify findings seen on AP/PA films.

An ankle AP (anteroposterior) and lateral x‑ray are standard two‑view radiographs used to evaluate the distal tibia and fibula, talus, and ankle joint. The AP view images the ankle from front to back; the lateral view images it from the side. These quick, noninvasive exams assess fractures, dislocations, joint alignment, degenerative change and help guide treatment; sometimes weight‑bearing or mortise views are added.

Position the patient in a lateral recumbent or seated position with the affected side down. Place the ankle in a true lateral so medial and lateral malleoli are superimposed; dorsiflex the foot to 90°. Center the X‑ray beam at the ankle joint (medial malleolus level) to include distal tibia/fibula and tarsals. Immobilize, use shielding, and verify alignment and image quality before releasing.

An ankle AP and lateral radiograph is ordered to assess bones and joint alignment after trauma, pain, swelling, or suspected fracture or dislocation. These views detect fractures, joint-space narrowing, osteoarthritis, loose or foreign bodies, and help evaluate reduction success and guide treatment decisions such as casting or surgery. They also screen for infection or chronic instability when clinically indicated.
