An IVP (intravenous pyelogram) is an X‑ray exam of the urinary tract where iodinated contrast is injected into a vein and serial images visualize the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. It helps detect stones, obstructions, tumors, or structural abnormalities. Preparation may include fasting, bowel prep, and kidney/contrast‑allergy checks. Risks include allergic reaction, contrast‑related kidney effects, and radiation; alternatives are ultrasound or CT.

IVP (intravenous pyelogram) costs vary widely by country and provider. In the United States private/facility fees commonly range from about $200–$1,500. In the UK it’s usually provided free on the NHS; private clinics may charge roughly £100–£400. In India private centres typically charge around ₹500–₹3,000. Final price depends on hospital type, imaging suite, contrast use and reporting fees.

A CT IVP is usually not painful. The CT scan itself is painless, though IV insertion may cause a brief pinch. Intravenous contrast commonly causes a transient warm or metallic taste, flushing, or mild discomfort; rare allergic reactions or contrast extravasation can cause more pain. Staff monitor you closely and treat reactions promptly. Inform them of prior contrast allergies or kidney problems.

An Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP) usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes for the imaging itself. With prep, contrast injection and any delayed films, the whole appointment commonly lasts 1 to 2 hours. You’ll receive dye through an IV, have several X‑rays over time, and wait briefly as the contrast moves through your kidneys and urinary tract.

Generally you should not eat solid food for about 4–6 hours before an IVP to ensure clear images; clear fluids are usually permitted up to 2 hours beforehand. Follow the specific instructions from your radiology department— they may require bowel prep or different fasting for diabetics. Also tell staff about contrast allergies, kidney problems, pregnancy, or medications before the procedure.
