X Ray Hip AP and Lateral View

AP (anteroposterior) and lateral are standard hip X‑ray projections. The AP view is taken front‑to‑back with the patient supine and shows the pelvis, acetabula, femoral heads and necks, and joint spaces. A lateral view (frog‑leg or cross‑table lateral) images the femoral head and neck from the side, highlighting fractures, femoral neck alignment or dislocation. Together they provide complementary diagnostic information.

AP (anteroposterior) view is an X‑ray projection where the beam travels from the front to the back of the body; often used when patients can’t stand and can slightly magnify anterior structures. Lateral view is taken from the side, producing a profile image perpendicular to the AP; it shows depth, separates overlapping structures, and helps localize abnormalities in chest, spine, joints or limbs.

The lateral view of the hip is a side radiographic projection (commonly frog-leg or cross-table lateral) that visualizes the femoral head, neck, acetabulum and proximal femur in profile. It helps assess femoroacetabular alignment, femoral neck fractures, dislocations and joint space. Positioning varies—frog-leg for routine imaging (hip flexed, abducted, externally rotated) and cross-table lateral for trauma when movement is limited.

A 4‑view hip X‑ray is a series of four radiographic projections—usually anteroposterior (AP) pelvis, AP hip, frog‑leg (lateral) and cross‑table (axial) lateral views—providing orthogonal images of the hip joints. It evaluates fractures, dislocations, arthritis, joint‑space narrowing and prosthetic position, helping guide diagnosis and management in trauma, chronic hip pain or preoperative planning.

An AP lateral refers to two standard X‑ray projections taken at right angles: anteroposterior (AP) and lateral. The AP view projects X‑rays from front to back, often used for supine or portable exams; the lateral view is taken from the side. Together they provide complementary planes to localize fractures, assess lungs or mediastinum, and evaluate alignment or hardware.

Lateral hip refers to the outer side of the hip around the greater trochanter, involving muscles (gluteus medius/minimus), tendons and the iliotibial band. Pain here commonly reflects trochanteric bursitis or gluteal tendinopathy, felt with walking, stair climbing or lying on the affected side. Assessment includes clinical exam and imaging; treatment focuses on activity modification, physiotherapy, pain relief and sometimes injections.
