A dorsal lumbar spine X-ray is a plain radiograph of the back that images the thoracic (dorsal) and lumbar vertebrae. It shows bone alignment, fractures, degenerative changes, and major deformities. Typically taken in front-to-back (AP) and lateral views, it’s quick and uses low radiation but is limited for soft-tissue or nerve evaluation, so CT or MRI may be needed for more detail.

AP (anteroposterior) and lateral are standard X‑ray projections. AP means the X‑ray beam passes from front to back of the body—often used when a patient can’t stand; it can slightly magnify anterior structures. A lateral view is taken from the side, with the beam passing through one side to the other, adding depth information to localize lesions and clarify overlapping structures.

Lumbar spine AP and lateral are standard X‑ray views: AP (anteroposterior) passes X‑rays front-to-back to evaluate vertebral alignment, lateral masses, pedicles and disc space symmetry. Lateral view images the spine from the side to assess vertebral body heights, intervertebral disc spaces, alignment, spondylolisthesis, compression fractures and degenerative changes. Together they help diagnose trauma, chronic back pain, arthritis and spinal instability.

AP lumbar spine is done with the patient supine or upright facing the image receptor, midsagittal plane centered and knees flexed to reduce lordosis. Hips level and shoulders relaxed. Direct a perpendicular central ray to L3 (about 1.5–2 inches above the iliac crest) or to the iliac crest for L4–L5, include T12 through the sacrum, and suspend respiration during exposure.

An AP lumbar spine is an anteroposterior X‑ray view of the lower back taken with the beam entering the front and exiting the back. It shows lumbar vertebrae, disc spaces, alignment and bony abnormalities, helping detect fractures, degenerative changes, infections and congenital anomalies. It’s a routine, quick imaging study often performed standing or supine as a first‑line assessment for low back pain.

The dorso-lumbar spine is the junctional region between the lower thoracic (dorsal) and upper lumbar vertebrae, typically spanning T10–L2. It is a biomechanical transition zone that bears high loads, enables trunk movement and posture, and is prone to fractures, degeneration and pain. The spinal cord usually terminates around this level, so pathology here can cause neurologic symptoms requiring prompt assessment.
