X Ray Dorsal Spine Lateral View

A dorsal lateral spine X‑ray position is a lateral projection that images the spine from the side, with the patient placed on their side or standing with the lateral aspect against the detector while the beam passes dorsally to ventrally. This side view shows vertebral alignment, body heights, disc spaces and posterior elements, helping detect fractures, malalignment and degenerative changes.

A lateral view X‑ray is a side‑on radiograph taken by directing the X‑ray beam from one side of the body to the other, producing a profile image of bones and soft tissues. It reduces overlap seen on front/back views, helps localize lesions or assess alignment (e.g., chest, spine, joints), and is performed with the side of interest placed against the detector.

A lateral view of the spine is a side X‑ray image showing the vertebral bodies, intervertebral disc spaces, spinal alignment in the sagittal plane and surrounding soft tissues. It helps assess spinal curvature (lordosis/kyphosis), vertebral fractures, slippage (spondylolisthesis), degenerative changes and disc height. Multiple levels (cervical, thoracic, lumbar) can be imaged to evaluate alignment and pathology.

The four lumbar spine radiographic views are: anteroposterior (AP) — frontal view of vertebral bodies and alignment; lateral — side view showing disc spaces and sagittal alignment; oblique (usually right and left) — highlights facet joints and pars interarticularis; and flexion–extension (dynamic) — taken in flexed and extended positions to assess segmental instability or abnormal motion.

The dorsal spine, also called the thoracic spine, is located in the upper and mid-back between the cervical (neck) and lumbar (lower back) regions. It comprises 12 vertebrae (T1–T12) that attach to the ribs, providing stability and protecting the spinal cord. This region supports posture and chest movements and is less flexible than the neck and lower back.

Position the patient in true lateral (standing or lateral decubitus) with shoulders stacked, arms forward or above the head to clear the spine. Center the X‑ray beam on the region of interest, collimate to include adjacent vertebrae, use appropriate exposure settings, and apply lead shielding. Instruct the patient to hold their breath and stay still. Obtain orthogonal views and confirm no rotation before reporting.
