X Ray Chest Oblique View

An oblique chest X‑ray is a radiographic view taken with the patient rotated so the X‑ray beam passes the chest at an angle (commonly about 45°). This angled projection separates overlapping structures, improving visualization of ribs, clavicles, lung apices and mediastinal contours, and helps localize lesions or confirm rib fractures, small effusions or pneumothorax. It’s quick, noninvasive, and complements frontal and lateral views.

Arms are moved out of the field, shoulders rolled forward, and the X‑ray beam is directed perpendicular to the receptor.

Position the patient rotated 30–45° from PA or AP so the area of interest lies oblique to the image receptor. Center the central ray perpendicular to the receptor at the targeted level. Collimate to include relevant anatomy, place side markers, and use gonadal shielding. Ask the patient to hold still or suspend respiration as required. Adjust exposure settings for body habitus.

It separates overlapping structures, improving visualization of ribs, apices, hilar regions, peripheral lesions, and pleural abnormalities. Oblique views (right/left, anterior/posterior) help localize lesions, assess fractures, and clarify findings not well seen on standard PA and lateral films.

An oblique ray is a light ray that travels or strikes a surface at an angle other than perpendicular to the surface or optical axis. It has both axial and lateral components, so it changes direction on refraction or reflection according to Snell’s law. Oblique rays are important in imaging, optical alignment and clinical eye tests used to assess alignment and surface contour.
