The lateral view of the cervical spine is a side radiographic projection showing C1–C7 in profile. It evaluates vertebral alignment, cervical lordosis, intervertebral disc spaces, facet joints, spinous processes, and prevertebral soft tissues. It’s used to detect fractures, dislocations, subluxation and soft‑tissue swelling. The patient is positioned with the neck neutral and the central X‑ray beam aimed around C4.

A lateral view of the dorsal (thoracic) spine is a side radiographic projection that visualizes vertebral bodies, intervertebral disc spaces, posterior elements and overall sagittal alignment. It helps detect compression fractures, kyphosis, degenerative changes, infections and alignment abnormalities. Performed with the patient in a true lateral position (standing, sitting or lateral decubitus) and arms out of the field to visualize mid-thoracic levels.

The lateral view is the single most useful cervical-spine X‑ray because it best shows vertebral alignment, vertebral bodies, disc spaces and prevertebral soft tissues from C1–T1. AP and open‑mouth (odontoid) views supplement it to assess C1–C2 and lateral masses; a swimmer’s view can reveal C7–T1. In suspected fracture or unstable injury, CT is preferred for definitive assessment.

The lateral cervical X‑ray is taken with the patient standing or seated, true lateral (left or right side against the image receptor), head in neutral, shoulders relaxed and depressed, and arms by the sides. The central ray is directed perpendicular at about C4 (thyroid cartilage), collimated to include C1–T1. Remove jewelry and instruct the patient to suspend respiration during exposure.

The lateral view is an X‑ray projection taken from the side to show anatomy in the sagittal plane. It helps localize fractures, dislocations, bone alignment, spinal curvature, joint space changes, and soft‑tissue or foreign bodies that may be obscured on frontal images. It’s commonly used for spine, chest, skull, and extremity imaging to provide depth information for diagnosis and treatment planning.

A lateral view is a side view of the body or structure, taken from either the left or right side. Images should be labeled "left lateral" or "right lateral"; if unspecified, it’s ambiguous. For chest X‑rays the left lateral is commonly used (patient’s left side against the detector) to reduce cardiac magnification and improve anatomical detail.
