The lateral view of the cervical spine is a side X‑ray taken from the skull base to the C7–T1 junction that shows vertebral alignment, vertebral bodies, intervertebral disc spaces, and prevertebral soft tissues. It evaluates cervical lordosis, fractures, dislocations, degenerative changes, and stability; dynamic flexion–extension lateral views can detect occult instability. Positioning is upright or supine with the beam directed laterally.

A PA (posteroanterior) X‑ray is a frontal chest view where the beam travels from back to front with the patient standing against the detector; it reduces heart magnification and gives a true lung silhouette. A lateral X‑ray is a side view with the beam passing laterally through the chest; it adds depth, helps localize lesions, and evaluates lungs, pleura, and mediastinal structures.

A cervical AP and lateral X‑ray are plain radiographs of the neck taken front-to-back (anteroposterior) and from the side (lateral). They visualize the cervical vertebrae, alignment, disc space height, fractures, degenerative changes, and airways. Used for trauma screening, neck pain, suspected instability or arthritis. The exam is quick, noninvasive and involves low‑dose ionizing radiation; further imaging may be needed for detailed assessment.

The lateral view is the most important cervical spine X-ray because it shows vertebral alignment, vertebral body heights, disc spaces and prevertebral soft tissues from C1–C7. AP and open‑mouth odontoid views complement it; oblique views evaluate neural foramina, and flexion‑extension films assess dynamic instability. Lateral imaging is first-line in trauma and neck‑pain evaluation.

A lateral view is an imaging projection obtained from the side, used to visualize anatomical structures without superimposition from front and back. It helps assess bone alignment, detect fractures, evaluate the spine, skull, chest (lungs and pleura), sinuses, joints, and soft tissues, and to localize lesions seen on frontal views for more complete diagnostic assessment.

C3–C7 are the third through seventh cervical vertebrae in the neck. They support the head, permit flexion, extension and rotation, and protect the upper spinal cord. Nerve roots exit between these vertebrae to supply the arms and shoulders. C3–C7 are common sites for disc degeneration, herniation, and injury, which can cause neck pain, radiculopathy, or spinal cord compression.
