X Ray Both Wrists Lateral View, in Navi Mumbai

A lateral wrist X-ray provides a side view of the wrist, showing the distal radius and ulna, carpal bones in profile, and the alignment of carpal rows and radiocarpal and distal radioulnar joints. It is used to detect fractures, dislocations, subluxations, joint space narrowing, carpal instability, visible foreign bodies, soft‑tissue swelling, and gross bone density changes.

The two standard wrist X‑ray views are the posteroanterior (PA) and the lateral views. The PA view shows the distal radius, ulna, carpal bones and joint spaces for fractures, arthritis and alignment; the lateral view demonstrates sagittal relationships, dorsal/volar displacement and carpal alignment. Together they assess bone integrity, joint congruity and detect occult fractures or dislocations.

A lateral view in X‑ray is a side‑to‑side radiographic projection obtained with the X‑ray beam passing from one side of the body to the other. It provides depth information and clearer visualization of structures overlapped on frontal views, aiding assessment of alignment, localization of lesions, fluid levels, and joint or spinal detail for diagnostic and treatment planning.

For routine wrist X‑rays, place the wrist flat on the detector for a PA (posteroanterior) view with the forearm supported, elbow flexed 90°, palm down and fingers partially flexed. For the lateral view, rotate the arm so the ulnar side rests on the detector, achieving a true lateral with the pisiform superimposed. Scaphoid views use ulnar deviation; central ray perpendicular to the wrist joint.

A wrist X‑ray shows bones, joints and alignment but cannot directly detect nerve damage. It can reveal fractures, dislocations or swelling that may cause nerve compression, suggesting possible nerve injury. To assess nerves, clinicians use physical exams, nerve conduction studies/EMG, ultrasound or MRI. See a doctor if you have numbness, tingling, weakness or persistent pain.

A wrist X‑ray cost varies by country and setting. In the UK it’s free on the NHS; private clinics usually charge about £40–£150. In the US expect roughly $100–$1,000 (outpatient $100–$300; emergency visits much higher). In India typical fees are around ₹200–₹1,500. Prices rise for multiple views or added radiologist reports; check your local facility and insurance coverage.
