X Ray Both Wrists AP View

The two standard wrist X-ray views are posteroanterior (PA) and lateral. A PA view shows the distal radius and ulna, carpal bones, and joint spaces—useful for detecting fractures and carpal alignment. A lateral view provides a side profile to assess dorsal/volar displacement, carpal relationships, and distal radius angulation. Both are taken with the wrist in a neutral, flat position.

AP view stands for anteroposterior. The X‑ray beam travels from the front (anterior) to the back (posterior) of the body toward the detector. It's used when patients can’t stand or for portable exams. AP films can magnify anterior structures (for example, the heart) and differ from PA views, so clinicians account for positioning-related distortion.

A wrist AP and lateral X-ray purpose is to visualize bones, joints and soft-tissue outlines from two planes to detect fractures, dislocations, growth plate injuries, degenerative changes and infections. Orthogonal views assess bone alignment, joint space, carpal relationships and foreign bodies, and help plan or confirm fracture reduction and treatment, monitor healing, and evaluate chronic wrist pain or arthritis.

For routine wrist X‑rays, position the forearm and wrist flat on the detector in a PA view (palm down, fingers extended). Take a true lateral with the elbow flexed about 90° and the wrist in a thumb‑up position. Additional views—45° oblique and a scaphoid view (PA with ulnar deviation and slight tube angulation)—are used to visualize specific fractures.

A 2-view X-ray obtains two radiographic images of the same body part from different angles—commonly orthogonal planes such as frontal (AP/PA) and lateral. This dual perspective reduces overlapping structures, improves detection of fractures, dislocations, joint alignment and chest or bone pathology, and guides clinical decisions. It’s a routine, low-risk step when a single view may miss important findings.

A wrist X-ray can reveal fractures, dislocations, and bone alignment; joint-space narrowing and bone spurs from arthritis; bone infections or tumors; growth-plate injuries in children; foreign bodies and calcifications; and placement of surgical hardware. It cannot reliably show most soft-tissue injuries (ligaments, tendons, cartilage), for which MRI or ultrasound are preferred.
