It detects degenerative changes and structural abnormalities but is limited for soft tissues (articular disc); MRI or CT better assess discs and detailed bone pathology.

Position the patient sitting or standing with the head stabilized. Obtain at least two views: closed‑mouth and open‑mouth (to show condylar translation), using a transcranial or lateral oblique projection for each side. Instruct the patient to bite a spacer for open mouth and keep teeth in occlusion for closed. Use thyroid shielding, correct exposure, and immobilize the head.
