AP (anteroposterior) view: X‑ray beam passes from the front (anterior) to the back (posterior) of the body onto a detector. It’s often used when patients can’t stand and can slightly magnify structures such as the heart. Lateral view: beam passes sideways (right‑to‑left or left‑to‑right) at 90° to AP, giving depth information and separating overlapping structures for localization.

The two standard wrist X‑ray views are posteroanterior (PA) and lateral. The PA view is taken with the palm flat on the detector to show carpal bones, joint spaces and distal radius/ulna alignment. The lateral view is taken with the thumb side up to show sagittal alignment, dorsal/volar displacement and carpal relationships. An oblique view may be added for specific fractures.

A PA (posteroanterior) X‑ray is a chest radiograph taken with the X‑ray beam passing from back to front while the patient stands, reducing heart magnification for clearer lung and mediastinum assessment. A bilateral hand X‑ray is radiographic imaging of both hands taken at the same time to compare bones, joints, growth plates and soft tissues. It helps diagnose fractures, arthritis, infections, congenital differences and assess bone age or alignment. The exam is quick and noninvasive—hands are placed flat for a few views. Radiation exposure is low; no special preparation is usually required.
