Common X‑ray views for the temporomandibular joint: panoramic (orthopantomogram/OPG); transcranial (lateral oblique/Schüller) with open‑ and closed‑mouth functional views; axiolateral oblique (Law) projection; AP axial (Towne) for condylar assessment; and specialized tomographic views. Open/closed comparisons assess condylar translation, fractures, and degenerative change. Cone‑beam CT or tomograms provide improved bony detail when needed.

A disorder of both temporomandibular joints (bilateral temporomandibular disorder) is dysfunction or pain affecting both jaw joints, causing jaw pain, stiffness, limited opening, clicking or locking, and headaches. Causes include arthritis, injury, teeth grinding, or muscle tension. Diagnosis uses clinical exam and imaging. Treatment is usually conservative—pain relief, jaw physiotherapy, bite splints, stress management—and rarely surgery for severe cases.

For a standard TMJ X‑ray the patient is seated upright with the head turned about 15° toward the side being imaged, Frankfort plane adjusted so the condyle projects free of the zygoma. Images are taken with both closed and maximally open mouth positions. The X‑ray beam is angled caudally (≈25–30°) through the TMJ; immobilize the head and use an appropriate bite block.

X-rays can detect bony changes of the temporomandibular joint—fractures, degenerative arthritis, and jaw alignment—using panoramic films or cone-beam CT for detailed bone views. Plain X-rays cannot show soft tissues like the articular disc or early inflammatory changes; MRI is the best test for disc position and soft-tissue pathology. Yes. Stress and anxiety commonly trigger or worsen TMJ symptoms by causing jaw muscle tension, teeth clenching or grinding (bruxism) and increased pain sensitivity. Stress may not directly create structural joint disease but can precipitate episodes, increase inflammation and prolong recovery. Treatment focuses on stress management, night guards, jaw exercises, pain relief and seeing a dentist or doctor for persistent or severe symptoms.
