X Ray Both Shoulders AP View, in Navi Mumbai

An AP (anteroposterior) view of the shoulder is an x‑ray taken with the beam passing from front to back. It shows the clavicle, acromion, glenohumeral joint and proximal humerus to assess fractures, dislocations, joint space and arthritis. It can be obtained upright or supine and is typically combined with lateral (scapular Y) or axillary views for complete evaluation.

The three standard shoulder X‑ray views are: 1) Anteroposterior (AP) — often obtained in internal and external rotation to assess joint space and the humeral head; 2) Axillary view — visualizes glenohumeral relationship and dislocations; 3) Scapular Y (lateral) view — assesses scapular alignment and anterior/posterior displacement. These three best evaluate fractures, dislocations, and degenerative change.

An AP (anteroposterior) view is a radiographic projection in which the X‑ray beam passes from the front of the body (anterior) to the back (posterior) toward the detector. It’s often used when patients cannot stand for a PA film, such as bedside or supine exams. AP films may magnify cardiac and mediastinal structures and can be less diagnostic than PA views, so position and clinical context matter.

The shoulder AP view is very quick: the X‑ray exposure itself takes less than a second. With patient positioning, breathing instructions and image checking, the single AP view usually takes about 5–10 minutes. If combined with additional views or part of a larger imaging visit (registration, changing clothes), the whole appointment commonly lasts 15–30 minutes.

AP stands for anteroposterior. In an AP X‑ray, the X‑ray beam travels from the front (anterior) to the back (posterior) of the patient. It’s commonly used for supine or portable chest radiographs and may exaggerate cardiac or mediastinal size compared with PA (posteroanterior) views. Clear labeling of AP projection aids accurate interpretation.

Yes. Plain shoulder X‑rays can show arthritis by revealing joint‑space narrowing, bone spurs (osteophytes), subchondral sclerosis, cysts, and bone deformity. They’re useful for diagnosing osteoarthritis and assessing joint damage, but early cartilage loss or soft‑tissue problems may be missed. If X‑rays are inconclusive or symptoms persist, MRI or ultrasound can better evaluate cartilage, labrum, tendons, and the rotator cuff.
