X Ray Both Shoulders AP View

An AP (anteroposterior) view of the shoulder is an x‑ray taken with the beam passing from front to back. It shows the clavicle, acromion, glenohumeral joint and proximal humerus to assess fractures, dislocations, joint space and arthritis. It can be obtained upright or supine and is typically combined with lateral (scapular Y) or axillary views for complete evaluation.

The three standard shoulder X‑ray views are: 1) Anteroposterior (AP) — often obtained in internal and external rotation to assess joint space and the humeral head; 2) Axillary view — visualizes glenohumeral relationship and dislocations; 3) Scapular Y (lateral) view — assesses scapular alignment and anterior/posterior displacement. These three best evaluate fractures, dislocations, and degenerative change.

If X‑rays are inconclusive or symptoms persist, MRI or ultrasound can better evaluate cartilage, labrum, tendons, and the rotator cuff.
