PA (posteroanterior) view is a standard chest X-ray where the X-ray beam travels from the patient’s back (posterior) to front (anterior) onto a detector placed in front of the chest. The patient stands upright facing the detector and usually inhales fully. PA reduces cardiac magnification and provides clearer lung and mediastinal contours compared with AP (anteroposterior) or supine/portable films.

Center the central ray at the third metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint — the palm’s midline at the base of the middle finger — with the hand pronated flat on the receptor. Include the distal phalanges through the distal radius/ulna. Separate fingers slightly, keep them flat, and use tight collimation to reduce exposure and improve image detail.

Standard hand X-ray views are: Posteroanterior (PA) — fingers slightly spread, palm on detector; Oblique (45°) — shows joint spaces and metacarpals; Lateral — true lateral for displacement and alignment. Additional targeted views include scaphoid (ulnar deviation) and Norgaard (ball‑catcher) views for suspected scaphoid fractures or rheumatoid disease. These are commonly obtained as a three‑view series and help detect fractures, dislocations, and degenerative change.

AP and PA refer to beam direction and hand position. In PA, the palm lies on the detector and the beam travels posterior→anterior, giving less magnification, truer joint spacing and better carpal alignment. In AP the palm faces up with beam anterior→posterior; it’s used when PA is impossible but produces more magnification and altered joint relationships, potentially affecting fracture or joint-space assessment.

A chest PA view is considered safe: it uses a very low radiation dose (about 0.02 mSv), much less than annual background exposure, and the health risk is minimal for most adults. It gives better image quality and less cardiac magnification than AP. Avoid or postpone if pregnant unless essential; discuss alternatives and risks with your clinician.

Chest X‑ray PA view in India typically costs between ₹150 and ₹800. Prices vary by city, facility type (government, private diagnostic centre or hospital) and whether the exam is digital or film. In major private urban centres it may reach around ₹1,000 or more, while government hospitals and public clinics often offer much lower, subsidised or free services.
