X Ray Both Forearm AP and Lateral View

AP (anteroposterior) view: X‑ray beam travels from the front (anterior) to the back (posterior) of the body; often taken with the patient supine or upright and can slightly magnify structures like the heart. Lateral view: beam passes from one side to the other, producing a side profile. Together they localize lesions, show depth, and assess bone alignment, joints, or chest anatomy.

A forearm AP and lateral X‑ray are two standard views that image the radius and ulna from front-to-back (AP) and from the side (lateral). They assess fractures, dislocations, bone alignment, joint involvement and foreign bodies. Proper positioning—arm extended for AP; elbow flexed 90° for lateral—helps detect displacement and angulation. Two views are essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Both AP and lateral radiographs of the forearm must include the elbow and wrist joints. Including these proximal and distal joints allows assessment of joint alignment, detection of occult fractures, and evaluation for associated injuries (dislocations or radioulnar joint involvement). Images should capture the entire forearm from the distal humerus through the carpal bones for accurate diagnosis.

Position the patient seated or standing with the elbow flexed 90° and the forearm in a true lateral (ulnar side on the detector, thumb pointing up). Include wrist and elbow on the image. Align humerus and forearm in one plane and center the x‑ray beam perpendicular to mid‑forearm. Use appropriate collimation, exposure settings, lead shielding and markers; immobilize the limb to avoid motion blur.

AP (anteroposterior) and lateral are two radiographic views — front‑to‑back and side‑to‑side projections. Together they provide perpendicular perspectives of the same anatomy, improving lesion localization and revealing findings that may be hidden on a single view. Most basic orthopedic and chest evaluations use at least these two views to increase diagnostic accuracy and reduce missed pathology.

In X‑ray imaging, "lateral" means a side view or projection taken with the X‑ray beam passing from one side of the body to the other. It shows anatomical structures in profile, helping separate overlapping tissues and localize lesions front-to-back. Lateral views are often obtained alongside frontal (AP or PA) projections to provide a clearer three‑dimensional understanding of pathology.
