X Ray Both Feet Lateral View

A lateral foot X‑ray is a side‑view radiograph taken with the foot in a true lateral position (medial side against the image receptor) so the plantar surface is perpendicular to the detector. The central beam is aimed through the midfoot (around the base of the third metatarsal). It shows bones, joint alignment, calcaneus, talus, metatarsals and soft‑tissue outlines to identify fractures, dislocations or degenerative changes.

A lateral view is an X‑ray taken from the side of the body so the beam passes sideways through the area of interest. The patient stands, sits, or lies with the side of interest against the detector. This projection separates overlapping structures, shows depth and alignment, and helps identify fractures, displacements, air–fluid levels, and spinal or chest findings not clear on frontal images.

The lateral side (lateral aspect) of the foot is the outer edge running from the little toe (fifth digit) along the fifth metatarsal to the lateral malleolus. It helps bear weight, provides balance and stability, and contains muscles, tendons and ligaments—commonly involved in inversion ankle sprains. Assessment focuses on pain, swelling, deformity and range of motion.

The standard and best approach is three views: weight-bearing dorsoplantar (AP), lateral, and a 30–45° oblique. Weight-bearing films are preferred when assessing alignment, arch height, midfoot and Lisfranc injuries. Use non–weight-bearing views for acute trauma if the patient cannot stand; consider CT for complex fractures. Specific toe imaging may use targeted AP and oblique views.

A lateral X‑ray is a side‑view radiograph and is not inherently left or right; it can be performed as a left lateral or a right lateral. The designation depends on which side of the patient is closest to the image receptor (left lateral means the left side is nearest). Radiographic markers or labels should always indicate which lateral view was obtained to avoid misinterpretation.

A 4‑view foot X‑ray is a set of four standard radiographic projections used to assess the bones, joints and soft tissues of the foot. Common views are AP (front-to-back), lateral, oblique, plus an additional view (weight‑bearing or a focused sesamoid/toe projection). It’s a quick, low‑dose exam to detect fractures, dislocations, arthritis and foreign bodies.
