X Ray Both Ankle Joint Lateral View

A both ankle lateral X‑ray is a radiographic exam capturing side views of both ankles for comparison. It evaluates bones, joint alignment, and soft tissues to detect fractures, dislocations, joint-space narrowing, ligament injury indicators, or swelling. Each ankle is positioned laterally; the view is often obtained alongside AP or mortise images to provide a complete assessment after trauma or for chronic ankle pain.

The lateral view of the ankle is a radiographic projection obtained with the limb positioned so the lateral aspect contacts the image receptor and the foot dorsiflexed 90°. The X-ray visualizes the distal tibia, fibula, talus, calcaneus, and ankle joint in profile, allowing assessment of joint alignment, articular space, and fractures or dislocations, including posterior malleolar and subtalar involvement.

The mortise view is the best single X‑ray projection for the ankle. With the limb internally rotated about 15–20°, it opens the ankle mortise and visualizes the tibial plafond, talar dome and distal fibula in one plane, improving detection of joint-space narrowing, subtle fractures and talar shift. Standard series still include AP and lateral views for complementary assessment.

An ankle joint X‑ray is a quick, low‑dose imaging test that produces detailed images of the ankle’s bones and joint spaces. It’s used to detect fractures, dislocations, bone spurs, arthritis and assess alignment. Typical views include front, side and oblique—sometimes weight‑bearing to evaluate stability. The test is noninvasive; remove metal jewelry and notify staff if pregnant.

An ankle lateral view clearly shows the tibia, fibula, talus and calcaneus in profile, allowing assessment of joint alignment, tibiotalar congruency, talar tilt, and anterior–posterior displacement. It improves detection of fractures (including posterior malleolus), dislocations, subluxations, joint effusion, and calcaneal fractures, and aids surgical planning and follow‑up by revealing subtle bony and soft‑tissue changes not seen on AP views.

A lateral (lat) view in X‑ray is a side‑on radiographic projection that images body structures in profile. It complements front (AP/PA) views by separating overlapping tissues, helping localize lesions, assess alignment (for example, the spine), and detect effusions or foreign bodies. The patient’s side faces the detector while the X‑ray beam passes laterally through the body.
