X Ray Both Ankle Joint Lateral and AP View

An ankle AP and lateral X-ray are two standard radiographic views used to evaluate the ankle joint. The AP (anteroposterior) view shows the tibia, fibula and talus from front to back; the lateral view shows them from the side. Together they detect fractures, dislocations, arthritis, and alignment problems. The exam is quick, noninvasive, and uses low-dose radiation.

AP (anteroposterior) view: X‑ray beam passes from front to back with the patient facing the detector, often used when supine or unable to stand; it can magnify mediastinal and cardiac structures compared with PA. Lateral view: beam passes side‑to‑side with the patient’s side against the detector, showing depth and anterior–posterior relationships to localize lesions and reveal structures hidden on AP/PA views.

Standard ankle radiographic views are AP (anteroposterior), lateral, and mortise (AP with 15–20° internal rotation to open the talar mortise). Additional views include oblique projections, weight-bearing AP/mortise for alignment and arthritis, and stress views for ligament instability. These views evaluate fractures, joint space, alignment, and syndesmotic injury. They’re commonly requested for suspected fractures or sprains.

Position the patient supine or seated with the knee extended. Dorsiflex the foot so the plantar surface is at right angles to the tibia (neutral), avoiding internal/external rotation. Place the cassette under the ankle and center the x‑ray beam at the ankle joint midway between the medial and lateral malleoli. Collimate to include the distal third of tibia/fibula and the talus; obtain lateral/mortise views if needed.

Ankle AP and lateral X‑rays are not painful themselves — the machine just records images quickly. Pain can occur when positioning or moving an injured, swollen, or fractured ankle. Radiographers aim to minimize discomfort, often imaging with splints or support in place. Tell staff if you’re in pain; they can adjust positioning, provide analgesia beforehand, or delay imaging if needed.

A PA (posteroanterior) chest X‑ray passes X‑rays from the back to the front with the patient facing the detector; it’s a standard upright view that reduces heart magnification. A lateral X‑ray is a side view (commonly left lateral) that shows anterior–posterior location and depth of abnormalities, helping localize lesions and better visualize lungs, mediastinum, and spine when used with a PA film.
