X Ray Base Of Skull

An X-ray of the skull visualizes the cranial and facial bones, skull base, sinuses, jaw and visible calcifications. It detects fractures, bone infections, bony lesions, deformities and some foreign bodies, and can suggest sinus disease. It does not show brain tissue or detailed soft-tissue injury; CT or MRI are preferred for intracranial assessment or complex trauma.

The base of the skull (cranial base) is the bony floor of the cranial cavity that separates the brain from the face and neck. It comprises the anterior, middle and posterior cranial fossae formed mainly by the ethmoid, sphenoid, temporal and occipital bones. It supports the brain and contains numerous foramina and canals that transmit cranial nerves, blood vessels and the spinal cord.

For a standard lateral skull X‑ray the head is placed in a true lateral: the midsagittal plane vertical and perpendicular to the image receptor, the interpupillary line perpendicular to the beam, and the Frankfort (orbitomeatal) plane parallel to the floor. For AP/PA or Towne projections the head is centered with no rotation and the chin/forehead adjusted to align the orbitomeatal/Frankfort plane as required.

Common skull X-ray views include: lateral (side view), anteroposterior/posteroanterior (AP/PA), AP axial (Towne), PA axial (Caldwell), occipitomental (Waters) for facial bones and sinuses, and submentovertical (SMV or basal) for the cranial base. These projections assess fractures, sinus disease, foreign bodies, and bony abnormalities; choice depends on the clinical indication and target area.

A head X-ray cannot reliably detect most brain tumors. X-rays show bone and some calcifications but lack sensitivity for soft-tissue masses. CT or MRI scans are the preferred tests to identify and characterize intracranial tumors; MRI is most sensitive. If symptoms suggest a brain lesion, clinicians usually order CT/MRI and may use contrast or biopsy for definitive diagnosis.

Approximate costs for a skull X‑ray vary widely by country and provider. In India it typically ranges about ₹200–₹1,200. In the UK it’s free through the NHS; private clinics charge roughly £30–£120. In the US an uninsured patient usually pays about $50–$400; insurance, Medicare, or public systems often reduce out‑of‑pocket costs substantially. Prices depend on location and number of views.
