A whole-body PET‑CT scan combines metabolic imaging (PET) with anatomical CT to detect and map abnormal metabolic activity throughout the body. It’s used to diagnose, stage and monitor cancers, find metastases, assess treatment response, guide biopsy and radiotherapy planning, and evaluate certain infections, inflammatory conditions, cardiac viability, or brain disorders such as dementia. It helps clinicians target and track disease.

A PET scan detects many cancers by showing metabolic activity, but it will not reveal all cancer in the body. Very small lesions and tumors with low metabolic uptake (some prostate, renal, or mucinous cancers) can be missed, and inflammation may cause false positives. PET/CT improves accuracy, but diagnosis usually needs additional imaging, biopsy, and clinical correlation.

A whole-body PET-CT typically takes about 60–120 minutes from arrival to finish. After tracer injection there’s an uptake/wait of roughly 45–60 minutes (sometimes up to 90), then the scanning portion lasts about 20–40 minutes. Allow extra time for registration, positioning and staff review. Times vary by facility, protocol and whether additional scans or contrast are needed.

A full-body PET scan is done mainly to detect or stage cancer, find metastases or an unknown primary tumor, and monitor treatment response or recurrence. It can also evaluate unexplained symptoms like persistent weight loss, fever or pain, and detect active infection or inflammation. PET provides metabolic information, often combined with CT for precise anatomical localization to guide diagnosis and treatment planning.

A positive PET scan shows an area of increased metabolic activity, which often suggests cancer but can also reflect infection, inflammation, or recent surgery. It raises suspicion and helps with staging and treatment planning, but is not diagnostic alone. Doctors will correlate findings with symptoms and other imaging and usually perform biopsy or additional tests to confirm the cause and exclude false positives.

A PET scan and an MRI serve different purposes; neither is universally "better." PET detects metabolic and functional activity, making it highly sensitive for cancer detection, staging and assessing brain function. MRI provides superior soft‑tissue anatomical detail, excellent for neurological, spinal and musculoskeletal imaging without ionizing radiation. Clinicians choose based on the clinical question; sometimes both are combined (PET/CT or PET/MRI).
