Vdrl (Rpr) For Syphilis, in Pimpri Chinchwad

RPR and VDRL are non-treponemal blood tests used to screen for syphilis by detecting antibodies to cardiolipin released from damaged cells. They’re useful for initial diagnosis and monitoring treatment because quantitative titers decline with effective therapy. They can give false positives (pregnancy, autoimmune disease, other infections), so reactive results are confirmed with specific treponemal tests.

VDRL (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) is a non-treponemal blood test used to screen for syphilis by detecting antibodies to cardiolipin released during infection. It’s useful for initial screening and monitoring treatment response via quantitative titers, but can give false positives in other conditions. Reactive VDRL requires confirmation with a specific treponemal test before diagnosis or treatment decisions.

Not necessarily. RPR and VDRL are different non‑treponemal tests that detect the same antibodies; RPR is generally slightly more sensitive and may show higher titers in some cases, but the results aren’t directly interchangeable. Titers reflect disease activity and treatment response, and positive or discrepant results should be interpreted clinically and confirmed with treponemal testing.

RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin) is a blood screening test for syphilis, not a treatment. It detects antibodies indicating active infection, but positive results need confirmatory treponemal testing. Syphilis is treated with appropriate antibiotics (usually intramuscular benzathine penicillin G); RPR titers are used to monitor treatment response and cure. Prompt diagnosis enables effective therapy and follow-up.

RPR is generally preferred for routine screening and treatment monitoring because it’s rapid, easier to read and gives a quantitative titer. VDRL and RPR have similar sensitivity and specificity, but VDRL is still used for cerebrospinal fluid testing (neurosyphilis). Both can produce false positives, so positive non‑treponemal results should be confirmed with a treponemal test.

If a treponemal test is positive but RPR (non-treponemal) is negative, possibilities include past treated infection (serofast), very early or late latent syphilis, low antibody levels, prozone effect, or immunosuppression. Repeat quantitative RPR in 2–4 weeks, do confirmatory treponemal testing, review clinical/treatment history, and consider empiric treatment or specialist referral for recent exposure, pregnancy, or signs of active disease.
