Vdrl (Rpr) For Syphilis

RPR and VDRL are non-treponemal blood tests used to screen for syphilis by detecting antibodies to cardiolipin released from damaged cells. If a treponemal test is positive but RPR (non-treponemal) is negative, possibilities include past treated infection (serofast), very early or late latent syphilis, low antibody levels, prozone effect, or immunosuppression. Repeat quantitative RPR in 2–4 weeks, do confirmatory treponemal testing, review clinical/treatment history, and consider empiric treatment or specialist referral for recent exposure, pregnancy, or signs of active disease.
