VARICELLA ZOSTER PCR (SERUM), in Pimpri Chinchwad

The PCR test for varicella‑zoster detects viral DNA in samples such as blister fluid, lesion swabs, blood, or cerebrospinal fluid. It is highly sensitive and specific, enabling rapid confirmation of chickenpox or shingles—especially atypical or complicated cases. Results guide antiviral treatment and infection-control decisions and are quicker and more reliable than virus culture, requiring a laboratory with molecular testing capability.

A “positive varicella” result can mean different things. A positive IgG test is good — it shows past infection or vaccination and indicates immunity. A positive IgM or PCR indicates active chickenpox, which is dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, and immunocompromised people and may need treatment. If you’re unsure which test this is or you’re high-risk or symptomatic, seek medical advice.

Varicella zoster virus can be mild in healthy children (chickenpox) but may cause serious complications—bacterial skin infections, pneumonia, encephalitis, or hospitalization. After initial infection it can reactivate as shingles, causing severe, sometimes long-lasting nerve pain (postherpetic neuralgia), vision loss if the eye is involved, and greater risk for older or immunocompromised people. Vaccination and early antivirals reduce risk.

A "normal" varicella‑zoster level isn't a single universal number. Labs measure VZV IgG and report either positive (immune) or negative (susceptible). Cutoffs vary by assay, so interpret results using the lab’s reference range. A positive IgG indicates past infection or vaccination and likely immunity; a negative result suggests no immunity and possible need for vaccination or further testing.

If you test positive for varicella‑zoster, follow medical advice promptly. A positive result can mean active infection (chickenpox or shingles) or past exposure (antibodies). For active disease, isolate until lesions crust, start antivirals early if recommended, manage fever and pain, and avoid contact with pregnant women, newborns, and immunocompromised people. Seek urgent care if pregnant, immunocompromised, elderly, or symptoms severe.

PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a molecular laboratory test that amplifies tiny amounts of genetic material to detect a pathogen’s DNA or, after reverse transcription, RNA. It’s highly sensitive and specific, commonly used for diagnosing infections (e.g., respiratory viruses) from swab or blood samples. A positive result indicates presence of genetic material, typically signifying current infection; results usually take hours to a few days.
