Urine Specific Gravity Test

A urine specific gravity test measures how concentrated urine is by comparing its density to water. It helps assess kidney function and hydration status—detecting dehydration, overhydration, or impaired concentrating ability—and can be influenced by substances such as glucose or protein. It’s performed with a dipstick or refractometer; normal adult values are typically about 1.005–1.030, varying with fluid intake and health.

A urine specific gravity of 1.030 is at the upper limit of the usual reference range and indicates highly concentrated urine.
