What is a Uric Acid Test?

This test measures the amount of uric acid circulating in your blood. Uric acid is a waste product made when the body breaks down purines from food and cells. Your kidneys usually remove most of it. High levels can form sharp crystals that cause joint pain and gout or can lead to kidney stones. The test helps detect and monitor gout, kidney disease, and conditions that cause rapid cell breakdown, such as some cancers or their treatments. Doctors also use it to follow response to medications that lower uric acid and to check how well the kidneys are clearing this waste. Low values are less common and may reflect other medical issues or medications.

Why Take a Uric Acid Test?

This test is often ordered as part of a metabolic or kidney function evaluation and when gout or kidney stones are suspected. Your doctor may request it if you have joint pain, sudden swelling, recurrent kidney stones, or are on chemotherapy or drugs that affect uric acid. Abnormal results can be caused by diet, alcohol, certain medicines, kidney disease, or inherited conditions. A family history of gout or kidney stones can make testing more important for monitoring and early detection.

What happens if uric acid is high?plus

High uric acid (hyperuricemia) can cause gout—uric crystals deposit in joints, producing sudden severe pain, redness and swelling, often in the big toe. It raises risk of kidney stones and can contribute to chronic kidney disease. Long-term elevation may form tophi (crystal lumps) and cause joint damage, and is linked with higher cardiovascular and metabolic risk; many people are initially asymptomatic.

How do I reduce my uric acid level?plus

Lower uric acid by losing weight gradually, drinking plenty of water, and cutting high‑purine foods (red meat, organ meats, shellfish), plus alcohol—especially beer—and sugary/fructose drinks. Eat low‑fat dairy, more vegetables, whole grains and cherries. Avoid crash diets and stay active. If levels remain high or you have gout, see your doctor—prescription urate‑lowering drugs (e.g., allopurinol) may be recommended.

What is the best drink for uric acid?plus

The best drink to help control uric acid is plenty of water to dilute urine and promote excretion. Low fat dairy and moderate coffee consumption are linked to lower uric acid and reduced gout risk. Tart cherry juice may help prevent flares for some people. Avoid sugary sodas and alcohol (especially beer), which raise uric acid. Aim for consistent hydration and moderation.

What is the normal range for uric acid?plus

Normal adult serum uric acid levels are generally: men ~3.4–7.0 mg/dL (200–416 µmol/L) and women ~2.4–6.0 mg/dL (143–357 µmol/L). Reference ranges can vary slightly by laboratory, age, pregnancy and testing method. Persistently higher or lower values warrant medical evaluation to assess causes such as gout, kidney function or metabolic disorders.

Which organ is affected by uric acid?plus

The kidneys are the main organs affected by uric acid. Kidneys filter and excrete uric acid; when levels rise, crystals can form causing kidney stones, obstruction, inflammation and progressive kidney damage or reduced function. High uric acid also causes crystal deposition in joints (gout), but renal handling and the risk of stones or chronic kidney disease make the kidneys especially vulnerable.

What foods cause high uric acid?plus

Foods that raise uric acid include organ meats (liver, kidneys), red meats (beef, lamb, pork), certain seafood (anchovies, sardines, mackerel, scallops, shellfish), sugary foods and drinks (especially fructose or high‑fructose corn syrup), processed meats, and alcohol—particularly beer. Frequent or large intake, obesity, dehydration, and rapid weight gain further increase uric acid levels.
