High uric acid in a 24‑hour urine (hyperuricosuria) means your body is producing or excreting excess uric acid. Causes include high‑purine diet, obesity, rapid cell breakdown (e.g., chemotherapy), certain drugs, or inherited disorders. It increases risk for uric‑acid kidney stones and may signal gout risk. Clinical evaluation is recommended to determine cause and guide diet, hydration, and possible medication.

A uric acid test measures blood uric acid levels during pregnancy to help detect and monitor hypertensive disorders—especially preeclampsia. Elevated levels can correlate with disease severity, worsening kidney function, and higher risk of fetal growth restriction or other complications. Results are interpreted alongside blood pressure, urine protein and clinical findings; it’s one part of overall maternal–fetal assessment.

Low uric acid (hypouricemia) in children can result from decreased production—e.g., inherited enzyme defects like xanthine oxidase or molybdenum cofactor deficiency—or increased renal loss from tubular disorders (Fanconi syndrome) and genetic renal hypouricemia (URAT1/GLUT9 mutations). It may also follow certain medications (allopurinol, rasburicase), severe liver disease, malnutrition, or systemic illnesses.

To lower uric acid quickly: drink plenty of water (aim 2–3 L/day) to boost excretion, avoid high‑purine foods (red meat, shellfish), alcohol and sugary/fructose drinks, and favor low‑fat dairy and cherries or tart‑cherry juice. A modest vitamin C supplement may help. These measures can reduce levels somewhat in 24 hours, but consult your doctor for testing or treatment.

The danger threshold for serum uric acid is generally considered above ~6.8 mg/dL, where urate crystals can form. Clinically, levels >7 mg/dL in men and >6 mg/dL in women are labeled high. Persistently elevated uric acid raises risk of gout, kidney stones, kidney damage, and cardiovascular complications; very high values (e.g., >13 mg/dL in men, >10 mg/dL in women) can cause acute urate nephropathy. Specific gravity usually 1.005–1.030; color clear to pale yellow. Abnormalities warrant clinical evaluation.
