A 3D scan of the uterus is a three‑dimensional ultrasound (usually transvaginal or transabdominal) that produces volumetric images of the uterine cavity and surrounding structures. It improves visualization of uterine shape, congenital anomalies, fibroids, polyps and endometrial pathology, aiding infertility evaluation and surgical planning. The test is noninvasive, uses sound waves (no ionizing radiation), and may include Doppler blood‑flow assessment.

The adnexa of the uterus refers to the ovaries, fallopian tubes and nearby connective tissue. An adnexal ultrasound (transvaginal or transabdominal) images these structures to detect cysts, masses, ectopic pregnancy, inflammation or free pelvic fluid. It assesses organ size, structure and blood flow (Doppler) and is commonly used for pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, suspected ectopic pregnancy or fertility evaluation.

A 3D ultrasound scan uses sound waves to build three-dimensional images of the fetus or body organs by compiling many two‑dimensional slices. It shows surface detail—facial features, limbs, and some structural anomalies—helping diagnosis and parental reassurance. The exam is non‑invasive and considered safe when performed by trained operators, used selectively alongside standard 2D ultrasound.

The ideal time for a 3D/4D pregnancy scan is usually between 26 and 32 weeks, with 28–30 weeks often giving the best facial detail. By then there’s enough amniotic fluid and some baby fat for clearer images; earlier scans lack detail and later scans can be affected by baby’s position or reduced fluid. These are elective and should be done by trained professionals.

A doctor may order a 3D ultrasound to get more detailed images of fetal anatomy when anomalies are suspected, to evaluate facial, skeletal, or neural defects, clarify findings from a 2D scan, assess placental location or uterine abnormalities, and aid planning for complex care or fetal procedures. It also improves visualization for parental counseling and evaluating multiple pregnancies.

Uterus scanning is usually not painful. A transabdominal ultrasound may cause mild pressure or discomfort from a full bladder; a transvaginal scan can cause brief pressure or light cramping but is generally well tolerated. If you have severe pain or anxiety, tell the sonographer so they can pause, adjust technique, or explain steps. Scans are safe and commonly used for diagnosis and pregnancy monitoring.
