Ultrasound Thyroid

Thyroid ultrasound visualizes gland size, shape and texture; detects nodules, cysts, solid versus fluid components, calcifications and suspicious features (irregular margins, microcalcifications, taller‑than‑wide shape). Doppler assesses blood flow and can suggest inflammation or hyperactivity. Ultrasound also evaluates nearby lymph nodes and guides fine‑needle biopsy. It does not measure hormone function — blood tests are needed for that.

Twenty signs of thyroid problems: persistent fatigue, unexplained weight gain, unexplained weight loss, cold intolerance, heat intolerance, dry skin, hair thinning or loss, brittle nails, constipation, diarrhea, slow pulse (bradycardia), rapid heartbeat or palpitations, tremor, anxiety or irritability, depression, menstrual irregularities, infertility, muscle weakness, swollen neck/goitre, and eye changes (bulging/exophthalmos).

Red flags on thyroid ultrasound include solid, markedly hypoechoic nodules; microcalcifications; irregular, ill-defined or infiltrative margins; a taller‑than‑wide shape; increased central vascularity; signs of extrathyroidal extension; suspicious cervical lymph nodes (rounded, loss of fatty hilum, microcalcifications); and rapid nodule growth or diameter >1 cm when combined with suspicious features. These findings warrant further evaluation (FNA or specialist referral).

A doctor orders a thyroid ultrasound to evaluate a lump, enlarged thyroid (goiter) or abnormal thyroid tests, to characterize nodules (solid versus cystic), measure size, assess blood flow, and identify suspicious features suggesting cancer. It’s used for neck swelling, pain, hoarseness, family history of thyroid cancer, and to guide or monitor fine‑needle aspiration biopsy and follow‑up of known nodules.

Thyroid ultrasound is very safe and uses no radiation. Risks are minimal: brief neck discomfort or skin irritation from probe pressure, anxiety from findings, and diagnostic limitations (false negatives or false positives) that can lead to unnecessary biopsies or overtreatment. If an ultrasound prompts fine‑needle aspiration, that procedure carries small risks of bleeding, infection, and temporary pain.

Cancerous thyroid nodules may present as a firm, fast‑growing, non‑tender lump in the lower front of the neck, sometimes fixed to surrounding tissue. Possible signs include hoarseness or voice change, difficulty swallowing or breathing, persistent cough, and enlarged cervical lymph nodes. Most nodules don’t cause thyroid dysfunction; pain is uncommon. Any rapidly growing or symptomatic nodule warrants prompt medical evaluation.
