An axilla ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to examine the armpit (axilla). It evaluates lymph nodes, palpable lumps, cysts, abscesses or suspicious masses, and assesses blood flow with Doppler. Commonly used for infection, breast cancer staging, or guiding biopsy/drainage. It’s quick, painless, radiation-free, and helps doctors determine further management.

Single axillary lymphadenopathy may be caused by local infections (cutaneous infections, insect bites, cat‑scratch disease), nearby malignancies (breast cancer, melanoma, metastases), reactive nodes after vaccination, primary lymphoid cancers (lymphoma), or granulomatous infections such as tuberculosis. Less commonly, systemic infections or autoimmune conditions present with an isolated axillary node. Clinical evaluation with imaging and sometimes biopsy is needed to determine the cause.

Yes. Rarely, breast cancer can arise in accessory (ectopic) breast tissue in the axilla, which can develop the same benign and malignant conditions as normal breast tissue. More commonly, axillary lumps are metastatic lymph nodes from a primary breast tumor. Evaluation includes physical exam, imaging (mammography/ultrasound/MRI) and biopsy to distinguish primary axillary breast cancer from nodal metastasis.

The axilla is the armpit region beside the breast. It contains axillary lymph nodes, blood vessels and fatty tissue that drain lymph from the breast. These nodes are checked for swelling, infection or cancer spread and are important in breast cancer staging, sentinel lymph node biopsy, surgery and imaging. Clinicians examine the axilla for lumps, tenderness or enlarged nodes.

Yes. Axillary (underarm) lymph nodes are normally small, soft and mobile, and can swell temporarily with local infection or after vaccination. Persistent enlargement (>4–6 weeks), nodes >1 cm, hard, fixed, painful, or accompanied by unexplained weight loss, fever or night sweats should prompt medical evaluation to exclude infection, inflammatory disease, or malignancy.

On ultrasound, cancerous lymph nodes often appear enlarged and round rather than oval, with cortical thickening and loss or displacement of the central fatty hilum. They may show heterogeneous echotexture, irregular margins, focal necrosis or calcifications, and abnormal vascularity (peripheral or chaotic flow) on Doppler. Multiple matted or fused nodes increase suspicion of malignancy.
