A color Doppler ultrasound of the scrotum is a noninvasive imaging test using high‑frequency sound waves plus color flow mapping to show blood flow in the testes and surrounding structures. It helps evaluate pain, swelling or lumps, detecting conditions such as testicular torsion (reduced flow), varicocele (dilated veins with abnormal flow), infection/inflammation (increased flow), and tumors. It’s quick, painless and involves no radiation.

A scrotal ultrasound is a painless imaging test that uses sound waves to examine the testicles and surrounding tissues. It evaluates pain, swelling, lumps or suspected masses, hydrocele, varicocele, epididymo-orchitis, undescended testis and trauma. Doppler ultrasound checks blood flow to detect torsion or inflammation. Results guide diagnosis, urgent treatment decisions and procedures like aspiration or biopsy.

Color Doppler ultrasound evaluates blood flow in arteries and veins by displaying flow direction, velocity and turbulence. It checks vessel patency, narrowing (stenosis), occlusion, aneurysm, blood clots, valve function and regurgitation, organ perfusion and fetal circulation, and vascular malformations. Waveform patterns and peak systolic/end-diastolic velocities help quantify severity and guide management.

The fetal scrotum and other external male genitalia may begin to be distinguishable on ultrasound from about 14–16 weeks, but reliable visualization is usually achieved at the mid‑trimester anatomy scan around 18–20 weeks. Testes often descend later in pregnancy or after birth, so scrotal contents may be absent even when the scrotal sac is visible.

A normal (grayscale) ultrasound produces black‑and‑white images of organs and tissues using sound‑wave echoes to show structure, size and texture. A color Doppler adds flow information: it overlays color on the image to show blood movement, direction and relative velocity, helping evaluate vessels, blockages or organ perfusion. Both are noninvasive and commonly used together for diagnosis.

You usually do not need to shave before a testicular ultrasound. Sonographers apply gel and can part hair if it interferes, but clinics may ask you to trim heavy pubic hair for better probe contact. If asked, trim carefully with scissors or clippers—avoid creams or hair removal products. Follow any specific instructions from the imaging center or your clinician.
