A normal post‑void residual (PVR) is generally considered <50 mL. Assessment may include ultrasound or catheter measurement.

PVR (post‑void residual) on ultrasound is the volume of urine left in the bladder after voiding, measured with a bladder scan or pelvic ultrasound. Monitor renal function and recurrent UTIs.

PVR can mean post‑void residual (urinary) or pulmonary vascular resistance. Low post‑void residual indicates good bladder emptying, lower risk of urinary tract infection and retention, and usually needs no treatment. Low pulmonary vascular resistance reduces right‑ventricular afterload and raises pulmonary blood flow; it may occur with vasodilation or shunts and can cause ventilation–perfusion mismatch and reduced oxygenation in severe cases.
