Ultrasound NT Scan

An NT (nuchal translucency) scan is a noninvasive ultrasound done at about 11–14 weeks’ pregnancy to measure the fluid-filled space at the back of the fetal neck. Combined with maternal blood tests and age, it screens risk for chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome and can suggest heart or structural concerns, while also confirming dating, fetal number, and heartbeat.

An NT scan is not usually painful. It’s an ultrasound to measure fluid at the fetus’s neck around 11–13+6 weeks. Most people feel only mild pressure from a full bladder or the probe; some may get slight cramping if a transvaginal scan is needed. The test is brief and noninvasive with no lasting pain—tell the sonographer if you’re uncomfortable.

At 12 weeks, a normal nuchal translucency (NT) is generally below about 3.5 mm, with typical values near 1.5–2.5 mm. NT measurements above the 95th centile (commonly ≈3.5 mm) are considered increased and prompt further assessment (detailed scan, noninvasive prenatal testing or diagnostic testing). Exact cutoffs vary with fetal crown–rump length and gestational age.

Next steps: discuss with your provider or fetal‑medicine specialist, consider non‑invasive prenatal testing (cfDNA), targeted ultrasound and fetal echocardiogram, and diagnostic testing (CVS or amniocentesis) with genetic counseling.

An NT scan is costly because it requires high-resolution ultrasound equipment and a specially trained sonographer to obtain precise measurements. It’s time-consuming, often includes pre-test counseling and detailed reporting, and may be followed by additional screening or diagnostic tests. Clinic overhead, quality-control standards, and limited availability of certified personnel further increase fees.
