Ultrasound Liver Elastography, in Navi Mumbai

Costs vary by country and setting. On public systems it may be offered free; privately it typically ranges from about $100–$500 in the US, £100–£300 in the UK, or ₹1,500–₹5,000 in India. Additional fees for consults or report interpretation may apply, and insurance coverage or referral requirements affect out‑of‑pocket expense.

Yes. Elastography (transient or shear-wave) measures liver stiffness and, with CAP or attenuation metrics, can detect and grade liver fat noninvasively. It’s useful for screening and monitoring fatty liver disease and fibrosis, but accuracy can fall in very mild steatosis, severe obesity, inflammation, or with operator variability. Liver biopsy remains definitive when results are unclear.

A normal liver elastography (FibroScan) score is generally below about 6.0 kPa (commonly ≤5.5–6 kPa), indicating little or no fibrosis (F0–F1). Exact cutoffs vary by device, probe and patient factors (inflammation, obesity), and higher values indicate increasing fibrosis. Results should be interpreted with clinical context and by a specialist. Repeat testing or liver biopsy may be recommended if results are abnormal.

Liver elastography (transient, shear‑wave, MR) is reliable for detecting advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis, with high sensitivity and specificity. It’s less accurate for mild-to-moderate fibrosis and results vary by method and cutoffs. MR elastography is most accurate. Readings can be affected by inflammation, cholestasis, obesity, ascites, and operator technique, so results should be interpreted with clinical context and, if uncertain, confirmed by biopsy.

Liver elastography is a non-invasive, generally painless imaging test. Most people feel only light pressure or a brief vibration from the probe; some report mild, short-lived discomfort if the area is tender or if you have ascites or obesity. MR elastography can cause noise or claustrophobic discomfort but not pain. No anesthesia or recovery is needed; serious complications are rare.

No single test is best. Initial evaluation uses liver function tests (ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, bilirubin) plus viral serology. Imaging—abdominal ultrasound—is usually the next step. For fibrosis assessment, transient elastography (FibroScan) or validated serum fibrosis panels are used; liver biopsy remains the gold standard for definitive diagnosis and staging when noninvasive tests are inconclusive.
