Yes. Elastography (transient or shear-wave) measures liver stiffness and, with CAP or attenuation metrics, can detect and grade liver fat noninvasively. It’s useful for screening and monitoring fatty liver disease and fibrosis, but accuracy can fall in very mild steatosis, severe obesity, inflammation, or with operator variability. Liver biopsy remains definitive when results are unclear.

A normal liver elastography (FibroScan) score is generally below about 6.0 kPa (commonly ≤5.5–6 kPa), indicating little or no fibrosis (F0–F1). Exact cutoffs vary by device, probe and patient factors (inflammation, obesity), and higher values indicate increasing fibrosis. Results should be interpreted with clinical context and by a specialist. Repeat testing or liver biopsy may be recommended if results are abnormal.

No single test is best. Initial evaluation uses liver function tests (ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, bilirubin) plus viral serology. Imaging—abdominal ultrasound—is usually the next step. For fibrosis assessment, transient elastography (FibroScan) or validated serum fibrosis panels are used; liver biopsy remains the gold standard for definitive diagnosis and staging when noninvasive tests are inconclusive.
