An inguinal ultrasound visualizes the groin and inguinal canal to detect hernias (direct, indirect, femoral), protruding bowel or omentum, and evaluates for incarceration or strangulation. Doppler assesses blood flow to involved tissues. It also identifies lymph nodes, soft-tissue masses, abscesses, hydroceles, enlarged spermatic cord structures or varicoceles, and guides treatment decisions or further imaging.

Use a high-frequency linear probe (7–12 MHz) with the patient supine and slightly rotated. Scan both inguinal regions in transverse and longitudinal planes, identifying the pubic tubercle, inferior epigastric vessels, and spermatic cord/round ligament. Ask for Valsalva or standing to provoke herniation; use dynamic imaging and color Doppler to assess contents, sac reducibility, and vascularity. Compare sides and document defect size.

The inguinal canal in adults typically measures about 4–6 cm long; it is slightly shorter in females (around 3–4 cm). It runs obliquely through the lower anterior abdominal wall from the deep (internal) inguinal ring to the superficial (external) inguinal ring. Canal caliber is small and variable, expanding with structures like the spermatic cord in males or the round ligament in females.

Inspect the groin with the patient standing and supine. Ask them to cough or perform Valsalva while observing for bulges. Palpate the external inguinal ring and spermatic cord, invaginating the scrotum with your index finger to follow the cord toward the superficial ring. Feel for a cough impulse, reducibility, size, tenderness, and skin changes. Examine both sides and assess for femoral hernias.

The inguinal canal is an oblique passage through the lower anterior abdominal wall, running from the deep inguinal ring to the superficial inguinal ring. In males it contains the spermatic cord and in females the round ligament; both sexes have the ilioinguinal nerve. It permits testicular descent during development and is a common site for inguinal hernias. Its length is roughly 4–6 cm.

Abdominal ultrasound has limited ability to examine the colon because bowel gas obscures images and ultrasound cannot reliably assess mucosal lesions. It can, however, detect some colon-related problems such as bowel obstruction, marked wall thickening, large masses, diverticulitis complications and abscesses, especially in children or thin patients. For polyps, early cancer or detailed mucosal assessment, colonoscopy, CT colonography or MRI are preferred.
