Ultrasound Heel

Therapeutic ultrasound can give short-term pain relief for some heel conditions (like plantar fasciitis), but solid evidence for long-term benefit is limited and inconsistent. It’s usually one component of conservative care—alongside stretching, strengthening, orthotics and pain relief. Discuss with a physiotherapist or clinician, as effectiveness varies by cause, severity and individual response.

A heel scan (calcaneal ultrasound) uses sound waves to measure bone density in the heel. It’s quick, painless and radiation-free, serving as a screening tool to estimate fracture risk and identify possible osteoporosis. It cannot replace central DEXA for definitive diagnosis or treatment monitoring; abnormal results typically prompt a DEXA scan and further clinical assessment.

Foot ultrasound detects soft‑tissue problems: tendon tears and tendinopathy (including Achilles), plantar fascia thickening/plantar fasciitis, ligament sprains, bursitis, ganglion or Morton’s neuromas, synovitis and joint effusions, superficial foreign bodies, and peripheral nerve entrapments. It also identifies superficial bone cortical irregularities and vascular issues like superficial venous thrombosis. Ultrasound gives real‑time dynamic assessment and guides injections or aspirations, but cannot image internal bone structure well.

There’s no single “best” scan for heel pain. Start with a plain X‑ray to exclude fracture or bony spur. For suspected plantar fasciitis or a fascial tear, high‑resolution ultrasound is excellent. If symptoms persist, are severe, or deeper structures are suspected, MRI gives the most detailed assessment of bone marrow, soft tissues and occult tears. Choice depends on clinical exam and suspected cause.

The best treatment for heel pain is conservative care: rest, ice, stretching exercises for the calf and plantar fascia, supportive shoes and custom or off‑the‑shelf orthotics or heel pads, and short‑term NSAIDs for pain. Physical therapy and night splints help persistent cases; corticosteroid injections are used if symptoms linger. Surgery is rare. Weight loss and activity modification aid recovery.

Costs vary by country and setting. In the United States a diagnostic foot ultrasound for plantar fasciitis typically ranges about $100–$600 privately (insurance may reduce out‑of‑pocket). In countries with public health coverage it’s often provided free to eligible patients; private scans commonly cost £50–£150. In India private ultrasound prices commonly run about ₹400–₹2,000. Prices depend on location, facility, and insurance.
