Ultrasound Guided FNAC

Ultrasound-guided FNAC (fine-needle aspiration cytology) uses real-time ultrasound to guide a thin needle into a lump or suspicious lesion to collect cells for microscopic analysis. It’s a quick, minimally invasive outpatient procedure that improves sampling accuracy for nonpalpable, deep, or small lesions (e.g., thyroid, lymph nodes, breast). Risks are low (bleeding, infection); nondiagnostic samples may need repeat or core biopsy.

Ultrasound-guided FNAC (fine‑needle aspiration) is usually quick and causes only mild discomfort—often a brief sharp pinch or pressure during needle insertion. Most people tolerate it without local anesthesia, though a numbing agent can be used if needed. Afterward there may be slight soreness, bruising, or tenderness for a day or two. Significant pain or complications are uncommon.

Costs vary widely: in India ultrasound-guided FNAC typically ranges about ₹1,000–₹4,000; in the UK it’s free on the NHS but private clinics charge roughly £100–£350; in the US total charges commonly fall between $200 and $2,000 depending on facility, imaging time, pathology fees and insurance coverage. If fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is positive for malignancy, you’ll be referred to a specialist team for further assessment. Confirmation often requires a core or excisional biopsy and imaging (ultrasound, mammography, CT/MRI) for staging. A multidisciplinary team will plan treatment—surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or targeted therapy—plus lymph node evaluation, possible molecular testing, and counselling about prognosis and next steps.

FNAC is less invasive, quick, low-risk and useful as an initial, rapid test for palpable lumps (thyroid, nodes, breast). However, it samples cells only and may be nondiagnostic; it cannot assess tissue architecture, margins, or receptor status. Core or excision biopsy provides definitive histology and is preferred when treatment planning or precise diagnosis is needed. Choice depends on clinical context.

Ultrasound can identify features that raise suspicion for cancer in a lymph node—enlargement, rounded shape, loss of the fatty hilum, cortical thickening, irregular margins, and abnormal blood flow. However, ultrasound cannot definitively diagnose malignancy; tissue sampling (fine-needle aspiration or core biopsy) and sometimes additional imaging are needed to confirm cancer and determine its type.
