Ultrasound Groin

A groin ultrasound visualizes soft tissues and vessels, identifying inguinal or femoral hernias (and whether bowel or fat is involved), swollen or abnormal lymph nodes, soft‑tissue masses or abscesses, and fluid collections or hematomas. With Doppler it assesses blood flow in the femoral vessels to detect thrombosis or compromised circulation. It also evaluates muscle/tendon injury and can guide needle procedures.

You usually do not need to shave before a groin (inguinal) ultrasound. Hair doesn’t affect imaging because the technician uses ultrasound gel to ensure good contact. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and follow any specific instructions from the clinic—sometimes they may ask you to remove clothing or trim excessive hair only if it interferes. Avoid applying creams, powders, or oils to the area beforehand.

Ultrasound (with Doppler) is the preferred first‑line scan for groin problems — it reliably detects inguinal/femoral hernias, enlarged lymph nodes, soft‑tissue masses, and vascular issues without radiation. If ultrasound is inconclusive or deeper pelvic, bony, or complex soft‑tissue pathology is suspected, MRI (best soft‑tissue detail) or CT (useful for bone/complex anatomy) may be used.

No special fasting or bowel prep is needed. Wear loose, two‑piece clothing so you can easily expose the groin; remove jewelry and topical creams. You may be asked to change into a gown and to cough, stand or strain to reveal a hernia. Bring prior imaging and a list of symptoms/medications. Gel will be applied; the exam usually takes 15–30 minutes.

You can develop a tumor in the groin, though many groin lumps are benign (hernia, swollen lymph node, cyst, lipoma). Tumors may be benign or malignant (e.g., lymphoma, metastatic deposits, soft-tissue sarcoma). See a clinician if a groin lump is new, enlarging, hard, painful, fixed, or accompanied by fever, night sweats, or weight loss. Evaluation may include exam, ultrasound or CT, and biopsy.

Yes. Ultrasound can detect many abdominal and groin hernias, especially superficial or reducible ones. Dynamic (standing/strain) ultrasound improves detection and helps differentiate from other lumps. It’s safe and radiation‑free but operator‑dependent and may miss deep, small, or intra‑abdominal hernias; CT or MRI may be recommended if ultrasound is inconclusive or symptoms persist.
