Ultrasound Eyes

An eye ultrasound (A‑scan/B‑scan) produces cross‑sectional images and axial length measurements of the eye and orbit. It detects retinal or choroidal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, intraocular tumors, lens dislocation, foreign bodies, and orbital masses; evaluates the optic nerve head and posterior segment when media are opaque, and provides axial length for intraocular lens calculations. It’s useful in trauma and unexplained vision loss.

Ocular ultrasound is generally safe and noninvasive. Side effects are uncommon and usually mild: transient discomfort or pressure from the probe, slight eyelid or corneal irritation, temporary blurred vision or light sensitivity, tearing, or redness. Rare complications may include corneal abrasion or local infection if the eye is contacted improperly. Report persistent pain, vision change, or discharge to your clinician.

Ocular ultrasound (A- and B-scan) is a safe, noninvasive imaging method used when the eye can’t be seen directly. It identifies retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, intraocular masses, foreign bodies, and measures axial length for cataract planning. High-frequency probes yield detailed images. It’s low-risk but should be avoided or performed with extreme caution if an open‑globe (ruptured) eye injury is suspected.

Eye ultrasound (B‑scan) costs vary by country and setting: in India about ₹300–1,500; in the UK it’s free on the NHS or roughly £50–200 privately; in the US roughly $100–600 for outpatient scans; in Canada around CAD 50–200. Prices depend on clinic type, location and whether insurance or public healthcare covers the test.

The best eye scan depends on the problem. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is first-line for retinal and optic nerve assessment (macula, glaucoma). Fundus photography documents retinal appearance. Fluorescein angiography detects vascular leakage. B‑scan ultrasound evaluates the posterior eye when media are opaque. CT is preferred for orbital fractures/foreign bodies; MRI is better for optic nerve and soft‑tissue orbital disease.

Ultrasound can assist but is not a primary test for glaucoma. Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) and anterior-segment ultrasound can image the drainage angle, lens position, or plateau‑iris configuration, helpful in angle‑closure cases or when the cornea is cloudy. Glaucoma diagnosis mainly depends on intraocular pressure measurement, optic nerve assessment, visual field testing, and OCT nerve-fiber imaging.
