Ultrasound Both Thighs

Thigh ultrasound visualizes soft-tissue structures — muscles, tendons, ligaments, fat and nerves — and assesses blood vessels for clots or flow abnormalities. It detects muscle tears, hematomas, abscesses, cysts, lipomas and foreign bodies, and helps evaluate swelling, infections and masses. Doppler imaging assesses arterial and venous flow, aiding diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis and monitoring vascular changes.

Leg ultrasound (Doppler/duplex) detects blood‑flow problems such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), venous insufficiency and valve reflux, peripheral arterial disease, stenosis or occlusion, and aneurysms. It also identifies soft‑tissue issues: Baker’s cysts, abscesses, hematomas, muscle tears, masses or foreign bodies, and can assess edema or swollen lymph nodes. It’s used to guide procedures like aspiration and vascular interventions.

An ultrasound of both legs (venous Doppler/duplex) typically takes about thirty to sixty minutes. Straightforward bilateral exams often finish in twenty to forty minutes, while more detailed mapping, technically difficult patients, or extensive disease can extend the study to an hour. Registration, a brief clinical history and image review may add a few minutes to the appointment.

To prepare for a leg ultrasound, wear loose, two-piece clothing and remove jewelry and lotions from the legs. You typically do not need to fast. Bring a list of medications, recent test results and your referral. Remove compression stockings several hours before the scan if possible. Inform staff about recent surgeries, anticoagulants or wounds, arrive early, and follow any clinic-specific instructions.

Yes. Ultrasound can detect many tumors in the leg, especially superficial soft tissue masses, showing size, location, whether a mass is solid or cystic, and blood flow with Doppler. It is quick and uses no radiation but is limited for deep or bone‑involving lesions. MRI gives better characterization and planning, and a biopsy is usually needed for a definitive diagnosis.

Upper thigh pain can signal muscle strain or contusion, hip joint problems (arthritis, bursitis), nerve issues such as sciatica or meralgia paresthetica, lumbar radiculopathy, or femoral nerve entrapment. It may reflect vascular problems like deep vein thrombosis, shingles, infection, or referred pain from the spine. Seek prompt care if pain is severe, persistent, worsening, or accompanied by swelling, numbness, fever, or breathlessness.
