Toxoplasma gondii IgG Antibody

A positive Toxoplasma IgG means you were exposed to Toxoplasma gondii in the past and your immune system developed antibodies. It usually indicates a past, not current, infection; IgM testing helps detect recent infections. Positive IgG generally gives some immunity, though reactivation can occur in immunosuppressed people and new infection during pregnancy is concerning. Discuss follow‑up with your clinician.

A negative Toxoplasma IgG means no past exposure and indicates susceptibility to primary infection. If acute infection is suspected, test IgM and repeat IgG in two to three weeks or use avidity testing, since early infection may not yet show IgG. Pregnant or at-risk people should avoid raw/undercooked meat, unpasteurized milk, contact with cat feces or soil, and follow repeat screening as advised.

IgG antibody positive means your blood contains immunoglobulin G specific to a germ, showing prior infection or vaccination and an immune response. It usually does not indicate active infection but suggests some degree of past exposure and potential protection. Levels and timing vary, so results should be interpreted with clinical history and, if needed, repeat or additional testing to evaluate current immunity.

Equivocal/borderline values sit near the cut‑off; positive IgG (above the lab’s reference) indicates past infection and likely immunity. Toxoplasma IgG antibodies usually persist for life and indicate past infection. Levels can decline over years but typically remain detectable; true loss of IgG (seroreversion) is uncommon. IgG alone usually reflects past, not active, infection. Reactivation can occur with severe immunosuppression. Acute or recent infection is suggested by IgM or rising IgG titers rather than IgG positivity alone.

Toxoplasma IgG alone usually indicates past infection and needs no treatment in healthy, non‑pregnant people. If pregnancy, immunosuppression, or suspected active/ocular disease is present, further evaluation and treatment are required: spiramycin to reduce fetal transmission in early pregnancy, and pyrimethamine plus sulfadiazine with folinic acid (or alternatives such as clindamycin/trimethoprim‑sulfamethoxazole) for confirmed active infection.
