Total Leucocyte Count (TLC)

A high TLC (elevated white blood cell count) usually signals an immune response—common causes include infection, inflammation, stress, smoking, corticosteroid use, or blood cancers such as leukemia. It may cause fever, fatigue or no symptoms. Persistent or very high elevations require further evaluation—repeat CBC with differential, tests for infection/inflammation, and sometimes bone marrow studies; consult your clinician.

A low total leukocyte count (leukopenia) reduces the body's ability to fight infections, causing frequent, severe or unusual infections, fever, sore throat and mouth ulcers. Causes include bone marrow disorders, certain medications (like chemotherapy), autoimmune disease, severe infections and nutritional deficiencies. Severe leukopenia, especially neutropenia, carries a high risk of life‑threatening infections and needs prompt medical evaluation and treatment.

When total cholesterol (TC) is high, excess lipids build up in artery walls forming plaques that narrow and stiffen arteries (atherosclerosis). This raises risk of coronary artery disease, heart attack, stroke and peripheral artery disease by reducing blood flow and promoting clot formation. Long-term high TC can cause chest pain, shortness of breath and organ damage. Managing lipids, diet, exercise and medications lowers these risks.

A TLC (total leukocyte count) measures the number of white blood cells in a blood sample. It indicates immune system activity—high counts suggest infection, inflammation, stress, allergic reaction, or blood cancers; low counts suggest bone marrow suppression, certain infections or medications, and immunodeficiency. Results guide diagnosis and monitoring; abnormal values prompt further tests to find the cause. Normal: about 4,000–11,000/µL.

Reduce high TLC by treating the underlying cause: seek medical evaluation, complete prescribed antibiotics or anti‑inflammatory therapy, and review medications (e.g., steroids). Adopt healthy habits—stop smoking, limit alcohol, manage stress, get adequate sleep, stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet, and exercise regularly. Control chronic conditions and repeat blood tests as advised by your clinician for tailored management.

Worry if leukocyte counts are very high or persistent, especially with fever, severe infection signs (rapid breathing, low blood pressure), unexplained weight loss, night sweats, easy bruising/bleeding, sudden weakness, or shortness of breath. Extremely high counts (eg, >50,000/µL) or immature white cells/blasts on a differential require urgent evaluation. See your doctor promptly; go to emergency care for signs of sepsis.
