Total IgE

High total IgE suggests increased allergic sensitization or parasitic infection and can occur with asthma, hay fever, eczema, or some immune disorders. It’s a nonspecific marker: elevated levels don’t identify the trigger and must be interpreted with symptoms, age, and lab reference ranges. Further testing (specific IgE or skin tests) and clinical assessment are usually needed to clarify the cause.

The IgE test measures immunoglobulin E antibodies in the blood. It helps diagnose and quantify allergic sensitization (food, pollen, dust mites, pets, insect stings), supports allergy diagnosis alongside history and skin testing, and can monitor response to immunotherapy. It also aids detection of certain parasitic infections and some immune disorders; elevated IgE suggests an allergic or parasitic cause.

Normal total IgE varies by lab and age, but for adults is generally considered below about 100–150 IU/mL (same as kU/L). Children may have lower or age-specific reference ranges. Values above the lab’s upper limit can indicate allergic disease, parasitic infection, or immune disorders. Always interpret results against the laboratory’s reference range and discuss abnormal values with your clinician.

If total IgE is high, avoid exposure to known allergens (dust mites, pet dander, pollen, mold, cockroaches), tobacco smoke and air pollution, strong fragrances and chemical irritants, and foods that trigger allergic reactions until testing confirms them. If IgE is high, treatment targets the underlying cause: identify triggers and manage allergies with avoidance, antihistamines, intranasal/inhaled corticosteroids, leukotriene antagonists, and allergen immunotherapy when appropriate. Treat parasitic infections with anti‑helminthics. For severe or refractory allergic disease, systemic steroids or anti‑IgE biologics (e.g., omalizumab) and referral to an allergist/immunologist may be recommended.

Vitamin D helps regulate immune responses; deficiency has been linked to increased allergic sensitization and higher IgE in observational studies. Low vitamin D may skew immunity toward Th2 and reduce regulatory T‑cell activity, potentially promoting IgE production. However, evidence is associative rather than proof of causation, and supplementation does not consistently lower IgE — more research is needed.
