How serious is a TEE procedure?

A transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) is generally safe and performed under sedation. Most people experience only mild effects—sore throat, hoarseness or brief discomfort—and recover quickly. Serious complications (esophageal injury, significant bleeding, arrhythmia, aspiration) are rare—well under 1%—but can require treatment or hospitalization. Risk is higher with existing esophageal disease or bleeding disorders; your care team will assess and monitor you.

Why TEE instead of echo?

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is used instead of transthoracic echo when higher-resolution, unobstructed images are required. With the probe in the esophagus behind the heart, TEE better visualizes prosthetic valves, vegetations in endocarditis, left atrial appendage thrombus, intracardiac masses, and subtle valvular disease. It’s preferred for intraoperative and critical-care monitoring or when transthoracic windows are poor (obesity, ventilation, chest wall abnormalities).

What is a TEE Test Test in Pune ?

What is TEE Test?

A TEE (transesophageal echocardiogram) uses ultrasound to create detailed images of the heart. The probe sits in the esophagus, which lies close to the heart. Cardiologists use it both preventively (to quantify long-term cardiac risk) and acutely (to detect heart muscle injury within hours of symptom onset).

What does TEE Test measure?

This gives clearer pictures than a standard external ultrasound. It shows valve structure, chamber size, blood flow, and possible clots or infections. Doctors use TEE to diagnose valve disease, endocarditis, blood clots in the heart, and to evaluate causes of stroke. It is also used before procedures like cardioversion or valve surgery.

What symptoms suggest TEE Test may be needed?

A doctor may recommend TEE Test when a patient reports chest pain or tightness (especially on exertion), shortness of breath, palpitations or irregular heartbeat, unexplained fatigue, dizziness, ankle or leg swelling, and pain radiating to the left arm, jaw, or back. If you have these symptoms, GetVisit offers booking and home collection across Wanowrie, Aundh, and other parts of Pune.

How is TEE Test performed?

This test is performed on a swab or fluid sample collected by a trained healthcare professional, not on a routine blood draw. Collection is quick and done at a GetVisit-partnered lab or collection point in Wanowrie or Aundh, Pune, after which the sample is dispatched to the NABL-accredited lab for processing.

How accurate is TEE Test?

Samples collected in Wanowrie or Aundh, Pune are processed at NABL-accredited labs using validated methods and internal quality control. Accuracy depends on correct collection technique by a trained professional, which GetVisit's partnered centres follow. Reports are accepted by hospitals, specialists, and insurers across India.

Are there any risks to TEE Test?

Risk is minimal. Swab, sputum, or fluid collection by a trained professional in Wanowrie or Aundh, Pune may cause brief, mild discomfort but no lasting effects. Any specific precaution for your test will be explained at the collection centre.

Why Take a TEE Test Test in Pune ?

When does a doctor order TEE Test?

TEE Test is an imaging procedure often used on its own or before heart procedures to get detailed heart images. It is ordered for symptoms like unexplained stroke, new or worsening murmurs, suspected valve infection, or to look for clots in atrial fibrillation.

Who should get TEE Test done in Pune?

Early-onset cardiovascular risk is climbing among Pune's young professionals in Hinjewadi, Baner, Aundh, and Magarpatta, where long IT working hours, high occupational stress, and food-delivery habits combine with sedentary routines to raise cholesterol and blood-pressure risk from the mid-30s. Regular cardiac testing is recommended for patients on statin therapy (to confirm LDL has reached the treatment target), post-cardiac event patients (to monitor secondary prevention), people with type 2 diabetes (which doubles cardiovascular risk), and anyone with persistently elevated blood pressure.

What conditions can TEE Test help diagnose?

Abnormal results may come from valve disease, infection, blood clots, heart muscle problems, or congenital defects. Family history of valve disease or inherited heart conditions can make a TEE more important.

What do TEE Test results mean?

LDL above 130 mg/dL: elevated risk , your cardiologist will advise dietary changes or statin therapy based on your overall risk score. LDL above 190 mg/dL may indicate familial hypercholesterolaemia. HDL below 40 mg/dL (men) or 50 mg/dL (women): reduced protection. Triglycerides above 200 mg/dL: diet, alcohol, or diabetes-related. Troponin above the 99th percentile: heart muscle injury , may signal a heart attack, especially if rising on serial testing.

How often should TEE Test be repeated?

Low-risk adults with a normal lipid profile: annually. Patients on statin therapy: every 6 months to confirm LDL is meeting the treatment target. Post-cardiac event patients: every 3 to 6 months as directed by their cardiologist. Patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia: every 3 months until stable on treatment.

What happens after TEE Test results are ready?

Results are delivered to your phone and stored securely on GetVisit. Any value the laboratory flags as critical is escalated for urgent review, and for everything else your doctor or a verified specialist can guide the next step at your convenience.

Frequently asked questions

For any unanswered questions, reach out to our support team via email. We will assist you as soon as possible

What is a TEE test used for?

A transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) is an ultrasound performed from inside the esophagus to produce high‑resolution images of the heart. It’s used to evaluate valve function, heart chambers, prosthetic valves, infective endocarditis, blood clots (especially in the left atrial appendage before cardioversion), congenital defects, aortic disease, guide interventional procedures, and assess cardiac function and blood flow.

Is a TEE test painful?

A TEE (transesophageal echocardiogram) is usually not painful but can be uncomfortable. The throat is numbed with local anesthetic and a mild sedative is often given to reduce gagging and anxiety. You may feel pressure, gagging or a sore throat afterward; mild chest discomfort is possible. Serious complications are rare, and staff monitor you closely to keep the test tolerable and safe.

What is the cost of a TEE test?

A transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) typically costs about $1,000–$3,000 in the United States (private pay), while private UK charges often run roughly £300–£1,000. In India, prices commonly range from ₹2,000–₹15,000 depending on hospital and sedation. Final cost depends on facility, anaesthesia, cardiologist fees and whether insurance covers part or all of the test.

Are you awake during a TEE test?

During a transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) you’re usually given local throat anesthetic and intravenous sedation. You remain awake or lightly sedated, drowsy and relaxed, often with little memory of the procedure, while your breathing and vitals are monitored. Rarely, general anesthesia is used (for children or complex cases). You can usually follow simple instructions but won’t feel discomfort.

Can I exercise before TEE Test?

Avoid strenuous exercise for 12 to 24 hours before TEE Test, since intense activity can temporarily change several blood markers. Light everyday movement is fine.

Can I drink coffee or tea before TEE Test?

If TEE Test needs fasting, avoid tea and coffee (even without sugar) during the fasting window, as they can affect some results; plain water is fine. If no fasting is required, your usual drinks are okay.
