TEE Test

A transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) is an ultrasound performed from inside the esophagus to produce high‑resolution images of the heart. It’s used to evaluate valve function, heart chambers, prosthetic valves, infective endocarditis, blood clots (especially in the left atrial appendage before cardioversion), congenital defects, aortic disease, guide interventional procedures, and assess cardiac function and blood flow.

A TEE (transesophageal echocardiogram) is usually not painful but can be uncomfortable. The throat is numbed with local anesthetic and a mild sedative is often given to reduce gagging and anxiety. You may feel pressure, gagging or a sore throat afterward; mild chest discomfort is possible. Serious complications are rare, and staff monitor you closely to keep the test tolerable and safe.

A transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) typically costs about $1,000–$3,000 in the United States (private pay), while private UK charges often run roughly £300–£1,000. In India, prices commonly range from ₹2,000–₹15,000 depending on hospital and sedation. Final cost depends on facility, anaesthesia, cardiologist fees and whether insurance covers part or all of the test.

During a transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) you’re usually given local throat anesthetic and intravenous sedation. You remain awake or lightly sedated—drowsy and relaxed, often with little memory of the procedure—while your breathing and vitals are monitored. Rarely, general anesthesia is used (for children or complex cases). You can usually follow simple instructions but won’t feel discomfort.

A transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) is generally safe and performed under sedation. Most people experience only mild effects—sore throat, hoarseness or brief discomfort—and recover quickly. Serious complications (esophageal injury, significant bleeding, arrhythmia, aspiration) are rare—well under 1%—but can require treatment or hospitalization. Risk is higher with existing esophageal disease or bleeding disorders; your care team will assess and monitor you.

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is used instead of transthoracic echo when higher-resolution, unobstructed images are required. With the probe in the esophagus behind the heart, TEE better visualizes prosthetic valves, vegetations in endocarditis, left atrial appendage thrombus, intracardiac masses, and subtle valvular disease. It’s preferred for intraoperative and critical-care monitoring or when transthoracic windows are poor (obesity, ventilation, chest wall abnormalities).
